President's Letter, July 2013
Summer 2013 is upon us and the Thames Club is again open for business. As your new President, I hope to serve in the tradition of our past presidents and continue to improve our club experience. We have a new lineup on the Executive Board. Nick Utz is our new President-Elect and chairs the Entertainment Committee. Janet Hinkle is our new Vice President and chairs the Membership Committee. Any member wishing to serve on either the Entertainment Committee or the Membership Committee should contact the respective chairs. Mike Stryker becomes the Past-President, replacing Mel Foti; who we hope will continue to provide his sage advice and innovative ideas. Mel completes a full five year tour of duty on the Executive Board and will have a well-deserved break from routine club management activities.
As before, Brenda Kramer remains our Club Secretary, Doug Chichester is our Treasurer, Dave Goebel and Chris Manner (along with Nick Utz) chair the House Committee, Jim Giordano chairs the Bowling Committee, and Lorraine Allen will continue to chair the Admissions Committee. We are ready for a successful 2013-2014 event year.
A Special Thanks to Mike Stryker: Mike completed two full years as our President last May. He presided over several major events which, if not managed properly, could have caused a significant distraction for the Thames Club. He did this at the same time that he changed professional positions and moved to a new house. We have a much stronger club as a result of his leadership. Please join me in thanking him and Donna for contributing his talent and judgment to our efforts to improve. Of course he still will serve for another year as the "Past-President" and, in that capacity, we will still call upon him to help us execute our strategy for success. When you see him, please thank him for his service to the Thames Club.
Thames Club Summer Schedule: The summer is upon us and the club is open for events. In the past, the Thames Club has operated on a reduced schedule for summer time. I think this "tradition" goes back to the days before the club was air conditioned. Needless to say, we now have air conditioning in the dining rooms and the limitations of old no longer apply. We will be open for business all summer long, with the exception of the first week in August (5-9) when we close for maintenance and staff vacations. Paula has sent a copy of the summer schedule out in a separate email but I am including it as part of this letter in Adobe "pdf" format for those members who cannot read Microsoft Word files.
Friday Prix Fixe Dinners: Starting on August 16th the Thames Club will be open every Friday night (unless there is another event) for dinner between 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. These dinners will feature an ever-changing prix fixe menu that will be advertised by email and posted on the board on the weekend preceding the event. The dinners are open to all members and guests. You can show up on the spur of the moment without making a reservation, although reservations are always encouraged to help in the planning and staffing. Friday evenings will feature one of Chef Jen's gourmet specialties with appetizer and dessert for a set price. You may also order any item off the Pub Menu, or you may make prior arrangements (in advance) with the Chef for special requests.
This evening will be a "restaurant experience" with exquisite service, elegant table settings, candles, and music. Our staff will create a special evening of ambiance and congeniality. You may arrive at a time of your choosing (anytime between 5:00 and 8:00 PM) and sit at a small intimate table, or chose a larger table to join with whomever you desire. This evening will feel very different from a regular club membership event. It will be more like going to your favorite restaurant for a special, quiet dinner, only you will know everyone around you. Dinner will be served upstairs in the President's Room and seating will be limited.
Many of our members elect to dine out one or more evenings each week. We hope you will consider the Thames Club as a destination on Fridays nights. Bring your guests or just join us for a special "date night" at the end of the week. Val and I will have a standing reservation every Friday night and we hope you to see many of you there.
First Friday Socials: The dates for our "First Friday" socials are listed below.
- July 12th – A Pre-Sail Fest Picnic (which is being held on the second Friday)
- August 2nd – theme to be determined
- September 6th – Bowling and Billiards Night – the bowling lanes will be open for anyone to try their hand – also the billiard table will be open
As always, the Club will offer lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Members may always reserve the club for special events, lunches, dinners, etc. on any day that the Club is open. Please call Paula for all reservations and other special accommodations.
Dr. Hugh Lena Memoriam: Recently, we lost a longtime member of the Thames Club, Dr. Hugh Lena. Dr. Lena was a pillar of our community and spent many years as a well known and respected surgeon at Lawrence and Memorial Hospitals. He was active in many club events for many years and had been Emily Higgins' bowling partner after his wife passed on. The loss of one is a loss to all. Dr. Lena will be missed.
I hope to see you at the club this summer.
